Church of Saint Peter
Características
The Church of San Pedro, located in the heart of the Monastery of Los Jerónimos, is one of the architectural jewels of Murcian baroque. Designed in a Latin cross layout, with a central nave and two side aisles connected by chapels, it combines the monastic sobriety of the exterior with an interior richly decorated, exemplifying the art and spirituality of the 18th century. Its construction and decoration involved masters such as Fray Antonio de San José, Fray Pedro de San Agustín, Juan García “the Portuguese”, and José Balaguer, who are key figures in the regional artistic heritage.
Historia
Erected in the first half of the 18th century, the church was an essential part of the Jerónimos monastic complex, serving as a spiritual center for the community and neighboring populations. Throughout its history, it suffered patrimonial losses after the Confiscation by Mendizábal and the Civil War, although it retains its original Baroque essence. Today, its restoration and conservation under the auspices of the Catholic University of San Antonio of Murcia ensure the preservation of one of the most emblematic temples in the region.
Usos
Currently, the Church of San Pedro is a sacred and academic space where UCAM holds institutional ceremonies, university liturgies, and cultural events. In addition to its religious function, it represents the spiritual and patrimonial link that unites the history of the monastery with the humanistic and Christian mission of the university.
