Cloister of the monastery

Características

The Cloister of the Monastery of Los Jerónimos, the historical heart of the Catholic University of Murcia, is a monumental space where art, faith, and knowledge converge. In the Murcian Baroque style, its architecture combines monastic elegance, symmetry, and serenity, offering a unique environment for study and contemplation. Surrounded by arches and luminous galleries, the cloister connects the main academic spaces of the campus and symbolizes the humanistic and Christian spirit of UCAM.

Historia

The Monastery of Los Jerónimos began construction between 1702 and 1738 under the direction of Fray Antonio de San José and Fray Pedro de San Agustín, renowned Jerónimos masters. Following the secularization of the 19th century, it was successively occupied by Jesuits and, later, by the Handmaids of Christ the King nuns. In 1981, it was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument and, in 1985, a Site of Cultural Interest, initiating its restoration. Finally, in 1997, the San Antonio University Foundation made it the headquarters of UCAM, restoring its splendor and educational function.

Usos

Today, the cloister is a living symbol of UCAM: it hosts institutional events, cultural activities, exhibitions, lectures, and academic ceremonies. Additionally, it is a space for meeting and reflection for students, professors, and visitors, who experience in it the harmony between heritage, faith, and knowledge that defines the university's identity.
